SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION
While trying to answer my guided question, “How can I communicate the meaning behind the Sura and Baya clearly?”, I first focused on texture, repetition, patterns, shapes, and negative space to explore each piece based on Indonesian Batik. In the beginning, I focused on negative space through a repetition of patterns to create an island and wave motif (images 2-5). The symbols of the shark and crocodile lacked communication with the overall theme of Surabaya. So, I experimented with negative space and my inquiry to express the etymology of Surabaya through letters (images 6-8). Using both the shapes of the island and the negative space of repeated patterns, both were combined to create a composition that was balanced and united (images 9-10). The end product is an accordion book that tells the story of Surabaya and my sustained investigation (images 11-15). This book encapsulates the storytelling aspect of the portfolio of the story and meaning behind the Sura and the Baya. It also reflects the wave-like texture of Surabaya as an island - and as a story. Stencils are included onto the covers of the book to add texture and display the artmaking process of block printing.
